If you want to achieve greatness, you have to know what you’re looking for. You won’t find it by wandering aimlessly though life waiting to stub your toe on success. You’re more likely to stumble into the quicksand of mediocrity. Most people who end up as mediocre real estate agents do so because they drift through their careers without planning. They have no purpose other than to live commission to commission, buying the groceries, paying the rent and holding off the bill collectors until their next sale. It isn’t that they’re not smart or lack the energy. You can work like a slave day in and day out and never pull yourself out of the rut you’re in. Why? Because your energy is being wasted. You’re not directing it toward a purpose.
When you have a purpose in life, then you tend to focus your energy on the things that move you toward that purpose. When you have no purpose, all your energy is like water going over a dam. It falls onto the rocks below, and then it rushes on downstream, but it doesn’t accomplish a thing. There is no purpose behind it. But when you take the same amount of water and run it through a turbine, it produces the electricity that lights cities and runs factories. It has acquired a purpose. So ask yourself now: “What do I want to do with my life?” Look within yourself. What kind of activity gives you the greatest satisfaction? What good can you accomplish for yourself and others by pursuing this activity?
The highest purpose, and the one most likely to lead you to greatness, is the one that enables you to benefit others. This doesn’t mean that you have to deprive yourself and your family to achieve greatness. It means simply that when you put yourself at the service of others, then they tend to happily pay you for services rendered. Aim high, and put your energy to work toward that purpose. Go out there with a servant’s heart. Help your buyers and sellers realize their goals and dreams. That’s when the commissions will begin coming in more and more. We get by giving.
